High schoolers invited to explore career paths through free summer institutes

High school students across Southwest Colorado have an exciting opportunity to explore career pathways this summer through three immersive institutes designed to provide hands-on learning experiences in skilled trades, environmental science, and healthcare:

  • Behind the Drywall Summer Institute (May 27-30, 2025)
  • Environmental Careers Institute (June 9-12, 2025)
  • Health Careers Institute (June 9-12, 2025)

These programs, open to rising 9th–12th graders, offer a unique chance to engage with industry professionals, gain real-world skills, and envision future careers.

Behind the Drywall Summer Institute (May 27-30, 2025)

For students interested in skilled trades, the Behind the Drywall Summer Institute at Pueblo Community College-Southwest Mancos Campus offers hands-on training in plumbing, electrical work, HVAC, and heavy equipment operation. Participants will gain practical experience while working with industry experts, learning skills that could lead to high-demand careers. Food, tools, and transportation are provided to ensure accessibility for all students.

Environmental Careers Institute (June 9-12, 2025)

Students with a passion for environmental science can join the Environmental Careers Institute at Fort Lewis College to explore Colorado’s ecosystems, develop leadership skills, and learn about career opportunities in conservation and sustainability. The program includes field-based learning experiences, overnight dorm stays, and all meals covered, providing an immersive look into environmental research and problem-solving.

Health Careers Institute (June 9-12, 2025)

For those considering a future in healthcare, the Health Careers Institute at Fort Lewis College offers an inside look at the medical field. Students will participate in hands-on demonstrations, professional mentoring, and career exploration activities led by healthcare professionals and faculty. Topics include disease prevention, mental and physical wellness, and the wide range of careers within the healthcare industry.
