In her nomination Ms. Tidwell wrote, "Mary often stays after class to talk about how excited she is to see connections between chemistry, physics, and biology. She loves her rigorous science classes this year because she feels like she's really starting to understand the natural world."
Mary was also recognized for being a quiet leader in her extracurricular activities like Girls Cross-Country and Track and Field. She also completes work at a high quality level, rarely misses school, and continues to challenge herself by taking rigorous courses.
The FORTitude Award is given by Durango High School and Fort Lewis College to recognize outstanding students who demonstrate academic success, leadership skills, school and/or community involvement, and the character attributes of respect, responsibility, and perseverance. As part of the award, Mary is the recipient of a $500 scholarship to Fort Lewis College, should she choose to attend after graduating DHS. The award also comes with a wide variety of FLC experiences that the student recipients can choose from, including guest dj-ing at the college’s radio station KDUR, guest passes to the Student Life Center, tickets to a home game, and chances to meet student athletes and the student body president. Mary will also be recognized on a Student of the Month plaque at DHS and in the DHS Newspaper, El Diablo.
