Durango School District launches new online learning program

The Durango High School Online Program (DHSOP) is designed for students in grades 9-12 who need a more flexible schedule or prefer a self-paced learning environment. Students enrolled in the program will complete coursework online while remaining fully connected to Durango High School, including access to athletics, extracurricular activities, counseling, and milestone events like prom and graduation.

“We’re seeing more families choose online learning options, and we want to make sure students can access that flexibility without leaving Durango School District,” said Superintendent Dr. Karen Cheser. “This program allows us to meet students where they are while keeping them connected to their school, their peers, and their community.”

The program will launch with a limited number of students in its first year to ensure strong support and a high-quality experience. Students will earn a Durango High School diploma upon completion of graduation requirements. They will have access to all DHS sports, clubs, activities, and milestone events such as homecoming and prom.

Instruction will be provided through a partnership with Colorado Digital Learning Solutions, a state-supported program that offers a wide range of courses taught by licensed teachers. Durango High School will provide additional support through in-person advising, counseling, and opportunities for in-person connection on campus.

The program is intended to expand options for students and families, particularly those who may otherwise choose full-time online schools outside the district.

“This is about offering choice,” said Robert Aspen, the director of DHSOP. “Some students thrive in a flexible, independent environment. With this program, they don’t have to leave Durango High School to find it.”

Enrollment for the program is limited to 50 students in the first year, and will open this spring through an interest form and application process. Space will be limited in the first year, and students will be selected based on readiness for independent learning and overall fit for the program.
