Community ECG Screening Drive – April 26
In partnership with Who We Play For – a nonprofit dedicated to preventing sudden cardiac arrest in youth – Durango High School’s HOSA chapter is helping organize a community-wide ECG screening event during the DEVO Bike Swap at Chapman Hill on Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event gives local families access to low-cost, accurate youth ECG screenings – an important tool in detecting hidden heart conditions before it’s too late.
The event is open to individuals ages 10 to 25. The cost is $25 per ECG, which includes a review by a pediatric cardiologist and a $5 contribution to support DHS HOSA’s ongoing work and future screening efforts. Participants are encouraged to pre-register at www.whoweplayfor.org/colorado-laplata; but walk-ins are welcome if space is available.
An ECG (electrocardiogram) is a quick, painless, non-invasive test performed while fully clothed that measures the heart’s electrical activity to detect potential abnormalities. All ECGs will be performed by trained DHS students under the supervision of medical professionals and the HOSA advisor. Results are emailed to participants after being reviewed by a pediatric cardiologist.
“As a student-athlete, I’d like to believe I’m in good shape, but without screening, I can’t be certain,” said Payton Woods, a DHS sophomore and HOSA officer. “Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in youth, and ECG screenings are vital. DHS HOSA and Who We Play For are helping to make this service accessible – and that saves lives.”
