DHS AVID is committed to ensuring ALL students are college and career ready upon high school graduation.

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.

Who are AVID students?

AVID students are typically students in the academic middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support. AVID students could also be advanced level students who struggle with organization and self-advocacy. These students often are not realizing their full potential academically.

It is the expectation that through the support of the AVID elective class, all enrolled students will participate in at least one Advanced Placement or concurrent enrollment college class prior to their high school graduation.  Our bi-weekly tutorial sessions with college tutors form the cornerstone for student success in their advanced level classes.
