AP Commitment Policies

Durango High School recognizes the value of student participation in advanced
academic coursework and encourages students to graduate with at least one advanced
academic course credit such as Advanced Placement. Participation in advanced
academic courses is a foundation of college readiness.

By signing up for an AP course, the student and parent acknowledge and agree to the following:

  • I understand that AP courses may be extremely challenging at first, and initial
grades may not reflect later performance, especially if it is my first time taking an
AP course. Therefore, I will commit to remain in my AP classes for one full year.
  • I understand that the DHS add/drop policies apply to AP courses, and I may not
drop an AP course after the drop period has closed.
  • I understand that AP courses carry an increased workload and time commitment.
I may need to attend study sessions outside of typical class hours. I have been
thoughtful about balancing my AP commitment with my other time commitments
    (non-AP classes, sports/activities, family, etc.).
  • I understand that I am expected to take the end of course AP exam in May. The
exam costs $99, and fee reductions are available based on need. DHS will not
allow financial hardship to hinder a student’s access to take the exam.
  • I will conference with my teacher on my progress, attend class regularly, and
seek out help and resources as needed.
  • I understand DHS recommends advanced underclassmen take no more than two
AP courses per year, and advanced upperclassmen are recommended to take no
more than four AP courses per year.
  • I understand that AP courses may have a summer assignment that I am
expected to complete prior to the first day of school.
