The 4th Annual Durango Education Fair

The 4th Annual Durango Education Fair will take place on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 from 5-7pm at Fort Lewis College. This informational fair celebrates the wonderful and unique educational choices and opportunities available in our small town. From innovative public schools, to a variety of private and parochial schools, to rigorous charter schools and many higher education opportunities, Durango-area schools offer choices, diverse curriculum and opportunities for every family from preschool through higher education.

Students Help Provide 50 Meals for the Holiday

This is the third year that we have provided Christmas dinner for DHS families, and the number we are doing has doubled in three years!! The FFA Chapter is providing the turkeys, and Skills USA is doing all the canned goods, including vegetables, sweet potatoes, and cranberry sauce.

Durango High School senior Carlos Salas was awarded the FORTitude Award for the month of October. Carlos was nominated by the entire DHS Counseling Department for being a great role model, and for showing outstanding determination and grit.

Graduation Guidelines Proposed for Class of 2021

Does the definition of a “well-rounded student” depend solely on academic success in the core subjects? Does it depend on students’ abilities to test well? Does it depend on their disposition and character? Many would argue that it is the combination of several aspects of education that lead to a successful graduate, whether that graduate plans to attend college or join the workforce upon graduation.

Grant to Help Durango High School DECA

Durango High School DECA is pleased to announce the receipt of a generous grant from For the Future Foundation, the 501 c-3 non-profit of Swan Global Investments in Durango, Colo. This grant will play a role in providing an assistant DECA advisor for the 16-17 school year, as well as support the hidden cost associated with substitute teachers while DECA travels. It will also allow DECA to install a display case to showcase student achievements such as awards and trophies earned in competition.

DHS Welcomes Dr. Ryan Haaland

On November 3 from 10:00am-11:00am, Dr. Ryan Haaland, Department Chair of the Engineering/Physics program is visiting Durango High School to engage with students and provide students with information on the FLC Engineering/Physics program as well as the NEW Computer Engineering program. Students interested in learning about the unique opportunities Fort Lewis College has to offer and to also ask questions about career and graduate school opportunities should sign up to meet with him at the Guidance Office.

Demon Cares Closet

Originating in the counseling department at DHS, the new Demon Cares Closet, run and managed by counseling secretary Melinda Wood, offers students a new opportunity to stock their closet, bathroom and school supplies, when they otherwise may not have the means to do so.

Winter Sports- Red Cards Are Due on November 11th.

Deadline for registering for Winter sports at DHS is Friday, November 11, 2016. Winter sports includes Girls & Boys Basketball, Girls Swim and Diving, Wrestling, while Cheer and Dance teams continue from the Fall season. All red card information and forms are available from the DHS website under the Athletics tab, or in the Athletics/Activities office and includes proof of current physical, proof of insurance, medical consent form, Athletics/Activities Code of Conduct signatures and registration fee. Those students who have registered for a Fall Sport may use paperwork already on file in the Athletics Office for their Winter sport participation.
